Block dissections of the neck

Introduction

This surgery is performed on the neck. Block dissection is done to remove the lymph node and other infected tissues of the neck surgically. The lymph cancer is very dangerous and spreads very fast. Thus removal of lymph nodes will stop the further enhancement of the cancer. So, this surgery is very vital and important.

Procedure of Block dissections of the neck

Patient is first given anesthesia so that he/she is unconscious while the operation is done. The surgeon then observes the lymph nodes which are nearest and examines whether they contain cancer cells or not. Consequently, the lymph nodes are removed. It is removed either by surgery or by radiotherapy. A cut is made into the crease of the skin of the neck and then the lymph nodes and the surrounding tissue are removed. The cut is then closed with the nylon sutures or skin staples.

Block dissections of the neck normally takes two to four hours of surgery depending on the condition of the infection.

Side Effects of Block dissections of the neck

Very minor side effects like weakness in the nerves and some injuries in the arteries and veins can be observed after the surgery.
