Introduction
Laryngectomy is the removal of the infected larynx and separation of the airway from the mouth, nose, and esophagus. In the case of larynx cancer this surgery is performed. This is a major surgery and can affect patient's speaking ability. Rehabilitation programs are there to train the patient post surgery.
Procedure of Laryngectomy
There are two types of laryngectomy, namely, partial and total or neck laryngectomy. In case of partial, a small portion of voice box is removed without any cut in he neck. Total laryngectomy requires the total or full removal of voice box after which the trachea is stitched back to the skin. This is known as the stoma or the permanent breathing hole. Neck Dissection is done when the doctor removes the lymph nodes from the neck to prevent the spread of cancer.
Length
It is a long process and takes some time to heal. After this operation is over, patient is advised to go home after five to seven days.
Side Effects of Laryngectomy
After the surgery, drains are placed under the skin to collect fluid from the neck and help the wound. There may be problems in swallowing food and in talking until a new trachea is used. There can be loss of smell ability and change in the taste of the food post surgery. Indigestion, acid washing from the stomach to throat and depression are seen in extreme cases.
