Periodontal Flap Surgery/Gingivectomy

Introduction

Gingivectomy or periodontal flap surgery is a kind of dental surgery which is performed in the case where gums grow in the front of the tooth. This changes the balance between the teeth length and the gum line. Thus, it also effects the shape of the smile. when pocketing depths become such as the cleansing and maintenance becomes difficult, this type of surgery is done.

Procedure

At the beginning of this process anesthesia is applied on the gum areas. This makes the gum area numb. Thereafter, a small slit is done to remove the excess gums with the help of dental tools. Each tooth which is inside that gum is then cleaned to prevent any bone loss. The infected tissues is then removed. Dentist then cleans and smoothens the surface of the damaged bones to give that perfect shape to the tooth. After this a periodontal dressing is done to cover the teeth and the gums to protect them while healing.

Length

Usually, this surgery takes around one to three hours. This surgery is not done at one visit. At each visit, a quarter or half of a mouth is treated.

Side Effects

Patient can experience a minimal swelling and pain in the area where surgery is done for few days post surgery. There can also be the risks of gum infection and tooth cavities. It is advisable to consult the dentist regularly after this surgery.
